Luhrmann To Direct Alexander The Great Movie
Australian director Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge) will next try his hand at a Hollywood extravaganza -- a film for producer Dino De Laurentiis about Alexander the Great, the Macedonian conqueror who lived between 356 and 323 B.C. "He's one of the best directors in the world; he's a genius," De Laurentiis told today's (Wednesday) Hollywood Reporter. "Any producer who wants to develop the story of a great man like Alexander needs a director with a vision." The film is likely to touch off considerable controversy over how the filmmakers handle the issue of Alexander's sexuality. Several biographies have depicted Alexander as homosexual, and he generally appears near the top of historical lists of "famous gays." However, gay-themed dramas have rarely succeeded at the box office, and no big-budget movie has ever been produced involving a homosexual hero.
*squee* My favourite director directing a film about Alexander the Great! *dies* Does this get any better, I ask you?
