Luhrmann To Direct Alexander The Great Movie

Australian director Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge) will next try his hand at a Hollywood extravaganza -- a film for producer Dino De Laurentiis about Alexander the Great, the Macedonian conqueror who lived between 356 and 323 B.C. "He's one of the best directors in the world; he's a genius," De Laurentiis told today's (Wednesday) Hollywood Reporter. "Any producer who wants to develop the story of a great man like Alexander needs a director with a vision." The film is likely to touch off considerable controversy over how the filmmakers handle the issue of Alexander's sexuality. Several biographies have depicted Alexander as homosexual, and he generally appears near the top of historical lists of "famous gays." However, gay-themed dramas have rarely succeeded at the box office, and no big-budget movie has ever been produced involving a homosexual hero.

*squee* My favourite director directing a film about Alexander the Great! *dies* Does this get any better, I ask you?

I don't see how it could get any better!... unless it's got Ewan McGregor starring in it, or something like that. Hey, it did get better... ^_^

Coolness ^_^ Now, as long as Leonardo DiCaprio or Heath Ledger isn't cast as Alex, then I'll be happy.

Interesting. I know that Oliver Stone was looking at directing an Alex flick. I've been watching several ideas for films develop over the last few years. Up until about last fall, they were suggesting Leonardo Di Caprio as Alexander (gag me with a pitchfork).

But I also know that there are three or four projects in the works, all trying to beat each other out. I can't remember which is which--I know one is a miniseries produced by Bruce Willis or some other big name for HBO, an adaptation of the goddess of all things Greek, Mary Renault's two Alexander novels.

However, clearly, as this one mentions De Laurentis, it must be the one based on the trilogy of novels by Italian author Valerio Manfredi, which is number three on the list.

I don't want to be pessimistic, but it is most likely that Oliver Stone's version is going to finish filming and production first. Stone has been working on this since '92 (he originally wanted Tom Cruise as Alexander), and Colin Farrell is as good as cast in the lead role.

Too many Alexander projects, too little time. For my part, I would rather see Fire From Heaven and The Persian Boy adapted. They are the best, in my opinion.
