Soooooo, we had our federal elections today. I remember about this… - Vox Audita Perrit, Literra Scripta Manet.... — LiveJournal
The heard word is lost, the written letter remains...
Soooooo, we had our federal elections today. I remember about this time 3 years ago I was squeeing about Kevin Rudd and Labor finally kicking John Howard and his conservatives out of government.

And now that exact same batch of conservatives looks set to get back in by a whisker. FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU.....I have no words. Well I do actually, but I'm going to need a drink first.

Our potential new PM is a conservative Catholic who has all the diplomacy of a bull in a china shop. His nickname in the Australian media is the 'mad monk' and he's an ardent monarchist who's probably not going to re-open discussion on Australia becoming a republic. ARGH.

There are two things I can take solace in about the election result: 1) We're probably going to have a hung parliament (so at least the conservatives won't be in the clear), and 2) The Greens, a previously-minor left-wing party with an environmentally-friendly agenda have benefitted from neither of the major parties winning everybody over. They now have a MP in the lower house, plus at least 4 new senators (there are currently 5 incumbents, so that's 9 now). Which is enough of a gain that they will finally be able to hold whoever's in government to account. One of these new senators is in my state, and I'm very pleased that my vote helped her there.

A current minister (in a portfolio I can't mention that's probably going to get split, shuffled and re-dealt when the dust settles) who knows Abbott personally described him as "a madman who will ruin the country". That said, there are incompetent (at best) and dangerous (at worst) conservatives on both sides, and any election where "stop the boats" is a viable policy can only end in tears. A hung parliament is pretty much the best news we could have at this point.

Me, I want to find and stab everyone who voted for Wyatt Roy. Also for Stephen Conroy.
