Movie musings

Was just reading cleolinda's latest linkspam post. One of the news posts was the new poster for The Mummy 3. Just looking at it, and all the other stills that have been released? Nope, not seeing it. The real clincher for me is that Rachel Weisz opted out of playing Evie, and they've got Maria Bello instead. Who is saying that they've made Evie into a completely new character. To which I was like 'AUGH, DO NOT WANT!'. Even though the lovely and talented John Hannah will be in the film, I I'm not a fan of recasting (unless it's absolutely necessary, like Michael Gambon taking over Dumbledore in the HP movies after Richard Harris died), particularly when they decide to overhaul the character completely in the process. So I'm giving the film a miss. That they've moved the action away from Egypt kinda sucks too. I get that China had mummies as well, but my inner classics geek prefers the Egyptian setting.

What I do like the sound of though, is the film Weisz is doing instead of The Mummy 3. The article Cleo linked describes the film (Agora) as follows:

"More specifically, Weisz will play the astrologer-philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, in Roman Egypt during the fourth century. 'Trapped in the Library of Alexandria as religious riots flare on the city's streets, Hypatia battles to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world. Meanwhile, her slave Davus (Minghella) is torn between his love for his mistress and the freedom he could attain by joining the rising tide of Christianity.' "

That? Sounds freaking awesome, and I would definitely see it. She's playing a historical figure and it's set in a period that I know a thing or two about. And if the article was anything to go by, then the recreation of Alexandria is going to look amazing. Whee!
