Doctor Who 3.1: Smith and Jones
DW series three is here. Yeyz!

Well, I'm not jumping to conclusions or anything, but I like Martha very much on first impression. Her introduction in this episode was very reminiscent of what was done in 'Rose' with the introduction of relatives, job, problems, etc. I like her better than the Rose of series two presently in that she's not clinging to the Doctor like some lovestruck teenager. I think her age and her profession are of advantage there. I just hope RTD doesn't pull her into that territory with his fanboy tendencies.

As far as plot went, it seemed a little bit thin (as far as RTD scripts go however, this is one of the better ones), since I think the main focus of the episode was establishing a rapport between the Doctor and Martha. This means that there was loads of handporn and running around (including the classic corridor chase), much as Nine and Rose did. I like the concept of the Judoon as some kind of intergalactic police. The plasmovore more or less seemed like an alien vampire and was just a bit too hammy, like a panto villain. But I didn't mind, because I was all about the Ten and Martha squee for this episode.

Maybe the one bit I took issue with was the sonic screwdriver. They couldn't have left Ten without one for more than half this episode? It seemed a bit silly to have it destroyed, only for him to get a new one at the end. Oh, and Ten's residual emo over Rose bothered me just a little, but it wasn't as in your face here as it was in The Runaway Bride. The kiss I didn't mind particularly. Flimsy reason? Yes. Completely random like Gwen and Jack in Torchwood? No. Well, at least not in my opinion anyway.

Looking forward to Shakespeare Code, though it occurred to me earlier that I'll be in Sydney next Saturday and I think Brendan's made dinner plans. Looks like I'll be recording it then.

Also, had marvellous time at the movies today with Suze and lillibetpip, and then had nice chat with amritsar at his place. Good to catch up with friends, I say!

Going up to the coast for a couple of days during the week to spend quality time with Ben and Suzanne. Ben's wanted me to come visit for a while, and now was definitely the time to do it.

And this time next week, I'll be in Sydney for Live Earth. Yay for being in Sydney with money to see Crowded House!

Current Mood: hopeful hopeful

I'm glad you had fun today at the movies too :)

And I meant what I said, when we were talking today, about picking up the phone for a chat anytime (in fact I'm going to vow to keep my room in some sort of order, so you can just come over and chat if you feel like it).

Also (although it's ridiculously early in the season), my current fave quote is
Crossing into established events [is] strictly forbidded. Except for cheap tricks.
I need to learn to make quote icons!

I absolutely loved the episode! Plus LoM looks really cool tomorrow - it's a great week for TV.

I think her age and her profession are of advantage there

What you say is completely true. Martha = win.

I adored Series 3 (with the finale airing tonight I think all together I can say this). "Shakespeare Code" was meh, but the one after? "Gridlock"? AMAZING.

Maybe the one bit I took issue with was the sonic screwdriver. They couldn't have left Ten without one for more than half this episode? It seemed a bit silly to have it destroyed, only for him to get a new one at the end.

Sonic Screwdriver = Companion. He says "I loved my sonic screwdriver" then tosses it away. Like saying "I loved Rose...oh well *is distracted*" Then gets a new one at the end, just like he gets a new companion replacement. All this would be of course better if Rose wasn't mentioned half the time. It's especially bad in "Shakespeare Code" but it does start to wane.

Have fun on your trip!

Will you be in Brisvegas at all this week, Steph?

Not really. I might be in the city for a little while tomorrow morning before I head out to Bracken Ridge for work, otherwise I'll be AWOL for most of next week. :/

You're here until the 11th, right?

Yes, I'm here until then. When will you be back?

I get back Sunday evening. I don't know what exactly my work situation is next week, but I normally have Mondays off, if you want to meet up then.
