ALIVE AND WELLS: Tom Cruise producing and possibly starring in a new big-screen version of H.G. Wells' classic The War of the Worlds. The alien-invasion story is scheduled to go into production in 2003.

No. I refuse to see a remake of my favourite Wells book with Tom Cruise in it in any way, shape or form. I had my own version of the film all set up in my mind, based on what happened in the book (unlike the kitschy 50's version). He'll probably butcher it! Perhaps I'm being a bit biased about this, but I just don't like Tom Cruise that much. I have this horrible image of him running around action-hero style as the Journalist (the main character and narrator of the story) with Martian explosions going off everywhere. It sounds so horrible to me. I'd much prefer it be done in the book's style, with a British cast (nearly every English actor that I like is a good candidate for the role, imo) and director and whatnot.
