Very exciting news re: Tintin movie trilogy ahead!

British writer on "Tintin" case

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - British scribe Steven Moffat, best known for writing the new "Doctor Who" series, is turning his hand to "Tintin," the DreamWorks movie trilogy collaboration from Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg.

Tintin, created by late Belgian artist Herge, is a young reporter and world traveler who is aided in his adventures by his faithful dog Snowy. He later was joined by such colorful characters as Captain Haddock, Professor Cuthbert Calculus and bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson.

The books, hugely popular in Europe, have been translated into 50 languages with more than 200 million sold.

Jackson and Spielberg are each directing an installment, with the helmer of the third movie to be determined.

OMGOMGOMG, I think I have died and gone to fangirl heaven. STEVEN MOFFAT FTW!

Steph,

I have all but 5 of the Tintin books, I would just be curious which ones they would make into movies, as there is a lot to choose from tin terms of story lines...

How about Asterx and Obelex next, I wouldn't mind seeing that in a movie too if they're going to make Tintin into one. :)

Adios!

Chris.

Ah, but they have already! Haven't you seen the two French productions with Gerard Depardieu? Mission Cleopatra and Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar. There is apparently another being made for release in 2008 as well.

OMGYAY!

Is it going to be live action?

No. I believe that they're planning on super realistic CGI (like they did with Bill Nighy in PotC, where he wore the bodysuit with the sensors on it), which could either look amazing or backfire spectacularly. I'm witholding judgment until I see the first stills.

Strangely, I can't picture any actors in my mind who could pull off Tintin, Captain Haddock, Calculus, etc. Really early on, the rumour was that Leonard DiCaprio would be playing Tintin (since been denied by Spielberg), which strikes me as the worst casting choice in the world.

Haha, yes, that would have been terrible. Since it's super realistic CGI I suppose the actual 'look' of the actor would matter less, and what would be more important would be movement and voice? I read an article that said with this new CGI they'd be able to age up/down actors so theoretically one actor would be able to play a character at two different ages.
